What is the Scope Independent Prescriber Bursary Scheme?
Applications for the 2023 Scope Eyecare Independent Prescriber Bursary Scheme are now closed.
Now in its second year, this was established to support Optometrists who wish to enhance their clinical skills and qualify as Independent Prescribers.
Through this new Bursary Scheme, Optometrists will be asked to submit an interesting patient case study where they believe having an IP qualification would have improved the patients experience and care.

Award Details

6 participants will be shortlisted to present their cases, via Zoom to a judging panel early June. The three winners will receive a £1,500 bursary to be used towards tuition fees to enhance their clinical skills and qualify as Independent Prescribers. The three runners up will each receive a £100 educational voucher.

Objective
The Scope IP Bursary is designed to support Optometrists who wish to enhance their clinical skills and qualify as Independent Prescribers.
Scope is delighted to offer three bursaries of £1,500 each to be used towards tuition fees at a centre of your choice.
Participants
The bursary is open to all UK Optometrists planning to complete an IP qualification in order to improve their skills and patient care.
Assignment
The application consists of two sections:
- Submit an interesting patient case study where having an IP qualification would have improved the patients experience and care. Please use the template provided but feel free to add any additional details that you feel would enhance your application. Your application should be submitted as a word document.
Points to include:
- Background
- Clinical History
- The patients presenting condition
- How you managed it
- Patient outcomes
- How would you manage it if you were IP qualified?
- How would this benefit the patient?
- A paragraph on why you would like to study IP
We are looking for candidates/recipients who see a real value in qualifying as an Independent Prescribing Optometrist. In a maximum of 1000 words we would like to hear what obtaining the qualification would mean
- to you personally
- to your clinical setting or practice
- to your patients
Timelines
Applications for the 2023 bursary are invited until midnight Wednesday 31st May 2023. Applications after this time cannot be accepted.
Selection of the winners will be completed by June 2023 and the winners will be notified by email and announced in the optometric press.

Terms & Conditions
All applicants must agree to their case study submissions being used for further education or used on other materials that highlight how to manage patients in clinical practice. They may be also posted on the Scope Education Hub and SCOPE HCP website.
After completing the IP course winners will be expected to share their experiences using IP and provide 4 further interesting case discussions within the first 2 years of qualifying to help promote an IP qualification for Optometrists.
Submitted cases must be original (i.e. not previously published). The case must be submitted by the applicant who must be the author and should not be submitted by anyone else on their behalf.
The case study (including any images, figures, illustrations etc) shall:
- not infringe upon the privacy or personal rights of others
- not contain any sensitive information
- not be the copyright of any other entity unless this is acknowledged
It is the authors responsibility to ensure that –
- They have obtained all necessary consent(s), approvals and authorisations in connection with the Case submitted.
- All the content of the Case, including the text, its title and media files have been stripped of all personal information that could be used to identify the patient.
Scope has the right to use, publish or reproduce any case studies submitted to them for promotional purposes or otherwise.
Participants have the right to access, review, rectify, cancel or delete any personal data held by Scope Ophthalmics Ltd.
